Officially known as the Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, the 27th presiding bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church, the Chicago-born Curry gave the address at the royal wedding, where his enthusiastic preaching style quickly drew notice from the royal family and people watching at home.

In contrast to the somewhat solemn style of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Curry gave an impassioned delivery that included references to slavery. His words drew amused reactions on social media, many of which noted wedding guests like Zara Tindall looking a bit alarmed.

While he had plenty of fans, some felt Curry’s address was inappropriate for the occasion.

He may not have been every guest’s cup of tea, but running away with the royal wedding — and holding everyone’s attention — is no small feat.
